The Belfast Road in Downpatrick has re-opened following a fatal road traffic collision.

The collision was reported to police at around 10.30pm on Saturday night (October 31st). 

A young woman lost her life in the single vehicle accident. Weather conditions at the time were very stormy with rainy.

Officers are keen to hear from anyone who was travelling on the Belfast Road at around that time and who may have witnessed the crash or captured dashcam footage that could assist the investigation.

Hazzard Sends Sympathies After Road Death 

Sinn Féin MP Chris Hazzard has expressed his sympathies after a woman died in a road collision in Downpatrick.

The South Down MP said: “I was shocked and saddened to learn of the death of a woman in a road collision on the Belfast Road in Downpatrick.

“Any life lost on our roads is one too many. “My thoughts are with the family, friends and loved ones of this woman at this sad and difficult time.”

Speaking today about the tragic road accident on Saturday evening in Downpatrick, Baroness Ritchie of Downpatrick said:  “I was deeply saddened to learn this morning that a young lady lost her life in a road traffic accident on Belfast Road, Downpatrick, near to the entrance to the Sewerage Works.

“A death at any time is particularly tragic and poignant, but when one loses their life in such tragic circumstances like a road traffic accident it is all the more difficult for their family and friends.

“I know that the local community will wrap the young lady’s family in their warm embrace. My thoughts and prayers are with this young lady and her family and friends at this tragic time”.

McGrath Expresses Condolences On Road Fatality in Downpatrick.

SDLP MLA Colin McGrath has offered his condolences to the family of the woman who died in an accident near to Downpatrick in the early hours of this morning.

Commenting, the South Down MLA said: “I offer my sincerest condolences to the family of the lady involved in this accident. This is heart-wrenching news that no family wishes to receive.

“The single vehicle accident took place late in the evening.

“I thank the emergency services for their speedy and diligent work in this awful accident.

“I know the community will rally round and support family and friends of the deceased at this time.”
