Water Supply Restored In Ardglass After Two Day Stoppage

For the past two days many homes in Ardglass have been without a water supply due to an emergency problem in the water supply.

Supplies of bottled water in the village were running low and many have complained they could not flush toilets, wash, bathe and shower, wash clothes, and dishes and cook using cold water.

The problem emerged late on Wednesday evening (16 July) and quickly affected a large section of the village.

A spokesperson for NI Water said: “NI Water is aware that some customers in the Ardglass area have experienced intermittent interruptions to supply and or low pressure over the last 30 hours. This is a result of a burst water main in the area and the required re-zoning to limit the affected area.

“The repair is proving difficult, however, NI Water estimates that the repair should be completed by early afternoon on Friday and normal service should be restored to all customers shortly after.

“NI Water would like to thank customers for their patience while we carry out this emergency repair work.”

Commenting, Councillor Dermot Curran said: “I am concerned that people in Ardglass were not notified sufficiently by NI Water about the extent of the problem and how long it would take to rectify.

“This has gone into its third day. Many families and homes in Ardlglass have been affected. There should have been a greater effort to clarify this… using social media channels such as Facebook would have been better than not knowing what was happening.

“I understand the problem was a burst pipe on the Ballydugan Road area. It is inevitable that things like this happen and we must prepare for the worst. Another day of no water in Ardglass and the situation would have been very difficult all round. Ardglass is a fishing port and it os critical for our local factories and processing units that we have a reliable and secure supply of water. It is fundamental to the needs of the village.”
