Killyleagh man accused of grooming a child on the internet

Police has confirmed that a Killyleagh man is to appear in court following an investigation on charges made against him for grooming a child for sexual purposes.

A statement from the PSNI said: “Detectives from the Police Service’s Child Internet Protection Team charged a 59-year-old male with Attempted Sexual Communication with a Child and Attempting to Arrange to Meet a Child Following Sexual Grooming.

“”The charges follow an arrest in the County Down area on 22nd February.

“He is expected to appear before Downpatrick Magistrates’ Court on 19th September.

“As is normal procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.”

Councillor Billy Walker is to appear in Downpatrick Magistrate’s Court in September.

Billy Walker, charged with grooming a child on the internet for sexual purposes, is a well-known personality around Killyleagh and beyond in County Down.

In 2014 he was, as a Rowallane councillor, chairman of the legacy Down District Council sitting as a Democratic Unionist Party councillor. He had also raised several thousand pounds for local charities.

However, following the charges made against him in February this year, he was suspended by the DUP pending the results of the court decision.
