Use Correct Bins For Waste Says Ards Council

Recycling Revolution

With over eighty per cent of everything we discard in our homes now recyclable, Ards and North Down Borough Council is reminding residents to dispose of items in the correct bin.

Part of the Council’s recycling revolution that last year saw an incredible 133% more food waste correctly disposed of in green and brown bins, saving a whopping £1M in landfill taxes and enabling the Council to establish a Recycling Community Investment Fund to undertake additional community projects, the Council is now promoting blue bin and glass recycling too.

Hundreds of items must be recycled in your blue bin, including but not limited to: plastic pots, tubs, trays and bottles; drinks and other food cartons; clean tin foil and aluminium food dishes; paper and cardboard; and metal food, drinks and aerosol cans.xa0 A detailed list can be found on the Council’s website at:

Food, blue bin recyclables and glass can no longer be placed in the grey/black bin.

Ards and North Down Borough Council is encouraging residents to dispose of waste in the correct bins.

By now all residents will have received their first glass collections that take place in four week cycles based on your address – collection calendars and guidelines on what items can be disposed of this way can also be found on the Council’s website or by downloading the free Bin-ovation app.

Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Robert Adair, is urging all residents to make the extra effort to recyclable all possible items.xa0 He said:xa0“We simply can’t afford to keep wasting our hard earned income on landfill tax; nor can we continue to spoil the environment through avoidable landfilling of valuable resource materials. Last year, everyone in Ards and North Down made a huge difference by recycling more food waste.

“We’ve done it before and, working together, we can do it again!xa0 This time by continuing food waste recycling as well as using our blue bins and starting kerbside recycling of glass, we can save another £1M in landfill tax.”
