“There are currently only three enforcement officers for the whole district.

Mournes’ Alliance Councillor Jill Truesdale on the prom in Newcastle. She has questioned Council management over the numbers and role of enforcement officers.

“And without employing any seasonal support officers to support these, our popular summer hotspots such as Warrenpoint and Newcastle etc are left without adequate support.

“This means that increasing instances of antisocial behaviour and damage to our natural beauty spots are not able to be effectively regulated.

“There are simply not enough staff on hand to deal with these problems.”

Cllr Truesdale added: “I have raised these concerns with council management, as well as questions around their recruitment process.

“I wanted to further understand how these jobs can be made available and promoted in the best possible way.

“Also it will ensure that our most popular destinations can thrive throughout the summer months.

“I will continue to work with council and my Alliance colleagues to ensure that our area is kept clean, tidy and safe throughout the busiest months, so that it can continue to be enjoyed and looked after for years to come.”
