Traveller Pride Week Celebrated At Slieve Gullion

Irish Traveller Culture Celebrated.

Slieve Gullion and Newry District Electoral Area (DEA) Forums celebrated Irish Traveller Pride Week with two exhibition events held on Saturday 22 July and Sunday 23 July. The Week highlights the history, traditions, and contributions of Irish Travellers.

The first event took place in Slieve Gullion Courtyard and featured a traditional barrel-topped wagon display, tin work, music, workshops and storytelling by the Meath Traveller Workshop. The day also included traditional music by the Traditional Arts Partnership and children’s activities.

The second event, which was held in Carnagat, included workshops, crafts, photo exhibitions, artefacts and a range of fun day activities.

Newry Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Charlie Casey said: “I was delighted to attend the event held at Carnagat to mark Irish Traveller Pride Week. The travelling community has a rich history and tradition that needs to be more widely recognised, appreciated and understood.”

Both events were supported by the Slieve Gullion and Newry DEA’s, and were delivered in partnership with the Council’s PEACE IV progamme, Newry Confederation of Community Groups, Carnagat Community Association, Traditional Arts Partnership and Meath Traveller Workshop.
