The Downe Hospital bus is to make a return in Downpatrick.

The South Eastern HSC Trust in partnership with Translink is pleased to announce the re-establishment of the onsite bus service to the Downe Hospital, the service will become operational on 17 April 2023.

Improvement works have been completed to the main roadway within the hospital to widen the route and create a brand new bus lane to accommodate Translink vehicles to drop off/pick up passengers directly outside the main entrance to the hospital.

This will ease patient journeys and reduce their need to rely on their cars or on relatives to drive them to the hospital.

Translink Service Delivery Manager, Ciaran McHugh, Service Lead for Transport and Travel Planning, Richard Walker, Translink Ulsterbus Inspector Greg McKernan, Translink Planning & Development Manager, Deirdre Watson and Estates Project Manager, Brendan Ennis.

Service Lead for Transport and Travel Planning, Richard Walker said: “I am delighted to confirm the completion of the recent road works at the Downe Hospital arranged by the Trust’s Estates Department.

“This improvement work has totally transformed the road layout with the new bus lane giving Translink vehicles direct access to the main entrance.

“It also provides a clear route from off the hospital site, without obstructing other vehicles on the site, creating a free flowing traffic system.

“A brand new bus stop has also been installed with a shelter to shield passengers from the elements while they wait on their transport to arrive.

“The works have been undertaken as part of the Travel Team Strategic Plan, which has an aim to improve access to all Trust sites.

“These improvements align with the site master plan and will see other areas being developed on the site in the coming years.

“Now that this work is complete we look forward to our visitors using this fantastic public transport service and hope that the user numbers will increase to assist in easing vehicular congestion.”
