The Write Cure group setting up at ALPS premises in Downpatrick
There may be a novel in everyone. But taking the first step in creative writing can be daunting.
Helen Hastings who is a very keen and experienced creative writer decided to ask ALPS organiser Ronan Gilchrist if she could run a writing group with an emphasis on improving mental health and well-being. Ronan gave a big thumbs up and Helen is now getting the final details organised with ALPS counsellor, Catherine McKeown.
Helen said: “The group will initially only run for 6 weeks, meeting for 2 hours a week and touching on different areas of writing.

“This could touch on areas such as short story writing, flash fiction, poetry, memoirs, and maybe even novel writing or whatever the group wants to focus on. It is a flexible format, relaxed, in a socially safe environment.
“The group is open to everyone, young or old, or from different backgrounds etc. Everyone is welcome.
“The relaxed sessions start on Tuesday 20th May 2025 from 11am to 1pm in the ALPS premises next to the car park in Irish Street in Downpatrick. They will hopefully help people on the way to developing an approach to writing, and it should provide a bit of social interaction too.
“So beginners or established writers can join in and throw ideas at the group and even read parts of their own writing.”

Helen, who also writes blogs for Down News, said it was basically a project about getting your thoughts down on paper (or onto the computer).
“It’s about finding confidence to actually start writing, the belief that you can do it. And along the way, like probably most writers, you will learn new insights about yourself as your self-awareness grows.
ALPS counsellor Catherine McKeown said: “These 6 short writing sessions should help build self-confidence and deepen you self-knowledge. It is a safe and creative journey you join in in the hands of Helen and myself.
“I’m experienced in a wide range of areas in counselling. I understand the great benefits that creative writing can bring and we are looking forward to the group getting up and running.
“Even writing a simple log or a diary entry can be beneficial.
“So anyone interested can contact or text me on: 07359657236 to get more information or register for the group.
“It will be fun, enjoyable and personally useful.”
