The 1991 All Ireland Anniversary Night Creates Huge Interest

Many of the real legends of Gaelic football have indicated that they want to play a part in what promises to be a truly special night of sporting nostalgia. The event, which will be held in the Bryansford clubrooms next Saturday night, will include a question and answer session involving the key personalities involved. down night ticket (click) Organising committee member George Sloan said that interest in being part of the 1991 All Ireland anniversary night had come from across the sporting spectrum. “The response has been huge and covers not just the GAA community. Down winning its fourth All Ireland back in 1991 would appear to have struck a chord with individuals from all backgrounds. “It was a win achieved against all the odds and it gave everybody a feel good factor. “It is also important that the event is being organised by Bryansford and held in their clubrooms. Over the decades they have been inextricably linked to every one of Down’s All Ireland teams.” The special evening is being hosted by the BBC’s Championship commentator Mark Sidebottom. The guest list will include Peter McGrath, the manager credited with masterminding Down’s football renaissance who will reflect on the match from his position on the sideline. And the insight from playing on the pitch, from the perspective of the ecstasy of winning and the agony of losing will be provided by the likes of Down’s Ross Carr, Neil Collins and Eamonn Burns. The Meath contingent is being backboned by the Sunday Game’s Colm O’Rourke, Robbie O’Malley and Bernard Flynn. The match itself, both in terms of the road to Croke Park and the drama of those 70 plus emotion filled minutes of the final, and its ultimate sports legacy, will come under the spotlight. In particular the impact of Down’ trailblazing breakthrough victory and the confidence boosting injection it provided the rest of Ulster football will be analysed.
