St. John’s GAC Notes For 12 September 2016

The Under-8’s played their final blitz of the season at home on Saturday morning where they faced Aughlisnafin, Drumaness and Saul in a series of small sided games.

dn_screenEvery player got maximum time on the pitch and all games were evenly contested and the effort from the players was superb. Many thanks to Aughlisnafin, Drumaness and Saul for the games.

With the Under-8’s training now finished for the season, we also thank the parents and family members for their support this season and look forward to the same in 2017.

Walking Group: Moorish Tower & Meelmore Circuit
We took an extended walk around Castlewellan lake to take in the views from the Moorish Tower (an atmospheric and misty view over the lake with the light from St John’s point flashing in the distance) and the Cypress Pond on Wednesday past (7th September).

Darkness was falling as we make our way back to base. This Wednesday (14th) we go to Murlough for what will be the last of our mid-week escapes. We will leave the club at 7.00pm and the Keel Point car park at 7.15pm.

On Saturday (10th September) we headed for the Mournes where Meelmore was the attraction of the day. We followed a mixture of old quarry tracks and sheep paths to do a circuit of Slieve Meelmore, crossing the Mourne Wall twice. We set a new height record for the walking group at 590m (did you know that just 0.35% of Ireland is over 600m, so we were looking down on 99.65% of the island) and a new height gain record of 390m – the scones in Meelmore Lodge were well deserved.

On Saturday 1st October we are going further afield with a trip to the Antrim Hills ending in Glenarm. We will be leaving the club at 9.00am that morning. Please let Kevin know if you are coming on that trip – it is also open to non-walkers – as soon as possible and certainly before 24th September.

Watch out for details of the Autumn programme of walks – coming soon.
