Sinn Féin MLA Sinead Ennis and Newry Mourne And Down District Councillor Mickey Ruane have appealed for the public in Warrenpoint to follow public health advice this Halloween.

Sin Féin MLA Sinead Ennis.

The Sinn Féin representatives said: “This Halloween is different and unique to any other for Warrenpoint as a resurgent Covid-19 takes hold in Newry and Mourne.

“In recent years the Safer Warrenpoint Project have hosted a series of Halloween events for local families to enjoy and to showcase the town but this is unfortunately not possible due to the ongoing pandemic.

Councillor Mickey Ruane.

“We have received concerning information that some in Warrenpoint have started collecting material for a bonfire within the area, and we are appealing directly to those involved to please stop.

“The hosting of a bonfire could attract crowds from across Newry and Mourne, and as the virus continues to spread rapidly any large gathering would be fertile environment for further spread.

“I am appealing to the public to please follow the health guidelines and to place their energy into protecting the health and wellbeing of their vulnerable family, friends and neighbours.

“The guidelines are not in place to needlessly disrupt family and social life, but to protect those that are vulnerable and to save lives.”
