Sinn Féin Looks At Flood Alleviation Measures

Progress on flood resiliency for South Down Says Sinn Féin

Sinn Féin representatives Cathy Mason MLA along with Chris Hazzard MP have welcomed a positive and constructive meeting with Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins this week.

The meeting focused on securing vital long-term solutions to enhance flood resilience throughout across South Down.

A key outcome of the meeting was the discussion around delivering a new, permanent solution to address persistent flooding in the wider Marguerite area of Newcastle.

Furthermore, representatives stressed the critical need for innovative nature-based solutions and increased cross-departmental work to effectively mitigate flooding, particularly the growing surface water run-off from the Mourne Mountains.

The South Down MP said: “This innovative and joined-up approach is essential for future-proofing our communities against increased freak weather events as a result of climate change.”

In a significant development for Downpatrick, Infrastructure Minister Kimmins confirmed her Department is in the advanced stages of developing a business case for a major Flood Alleviation Scheme in the town centre.

Cathy Mason MLA said: “This scheme will protect more than 100 town centre homes and businesses, and we are expecting it to be published early next Spring.

“Sinn Féin’s priority is to help strengthen community resilience, and ensure that local homes and businesses are protected.”

Chris Hazzard added: “As we continue to witness the devastating impact of climate change on homes and local businesses, Sinn Féin will continue to work with everyone… government departments and local partners to protect our communities.”
