A multi-agency investigation is now ongoing but the deaths of Francie and Nan O’Reilly who were in their seventies are thought to have been caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. Francie was a retired gardener who had lived just  south of Newcastle.

South Down MP Margaret Ritchie said that she was “shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the sudden deaths.”

She added: “I have been in touch with local police who have informed me of the discovery of two bodies in the South Down caravan site.

“I understand that police are treating it as suspected carbon monoxide poisoning at this stage.

“I want to extend my deepest sympathies to the families of these two people who are undoubtedly going through a deeply traumatic and difficult time. I have no doubt that this tight knit community will rally round and support them throughout the coming days and weeks.”

“I’m shocked and deeply saddened by this awful discovery.”

Newcastle man Oliver King who was at the scene last night said the man who died was “an honest, quiet, reserved and genuine person and much respected in the local community.”

The Health and Safety Executive NI (HSENI) are also examining the scene of the tragedy and the remains of the couple have been taken away for further examination.

Councillor patrick Clarke (Alliance) said: “I and  wish to convey my sincere and profound condolences to the families of both deceased during this very difficult and traumatic time. I am just shocked at this terrible tragedy.”
