Shannon meets with Reps from Unite and GMB regarding the Boeing acquisition of Spirit
Strangford MP Jim Shannon MP has met with the Unite and GMB trade unions over issues relating o the acqusation of Sprit.
He said: “It was fantastic to meet with representatives from Unite and GMB to listen to and discuss their concerns regarding the buy over of Spirit and the potential carve up by Airbus of Northern Ireland facilities.
“The Aerospace Sector in Northern Ireland is a vital component of its economy, contributing approximately £2.2 billion in turnover and employing around 9,000 people as of 2022.
“It is crucial that we make sure any buy over is a good deal for the workers and local supply chain.
“There are thousands of jobs that could potentially be put at risk and thousands of pounds could be lost in local supply, especially within the local area of Ards and North Down.
“The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Hillary Benn MP, has a moral responsibility to ensure Northern Ireland Aerospace workers are not left behind and he has the power to step in and protect them.
“I have also applied for a Chamber Debate on this issue and have hopes that the Government will do the right thing by Northern Ireland, and it is about time they stepped in to do so.”
