Shannon Calls For More Lorry Space On Portaferry Road

Large Vehicles on Portaferry Road Newtownards need more manoeuvring space says Shannon.

Strangford MP Jim Shannon has called for Transport NI to urgently extend the double yellow lines at the newly constructed pedestrian islands on the Portaferry Road in Newtownards.

Mr Shannon said: “The pedestrian island has greatly improved the road safety but only with the system now in operation is it clear that a problem has presented itself.

“Large vehicles which use this route are having real problems trying to negotiate around the parked cars on the Portaferry Road when the pitches are in operation and busy.

“With the return of sports to Londonderry Park in Ards, the numbers of vehicles parking at the edge of the yellow lines on the footpath and road are making it difficult to get around the parked vehicles.

“A possible solution that I can see is to extend the yellow lines around the island and that will enable milk lorries, tractors and trailers and lorries to get round the island and parked cars.

“I have written to Transport NI to request this solution be put in to place urgently before a parked car is unintentionally damaged or an accident happens.”
