At 6pm Colm McAlinden from Down Community Radio will start the main part of the evening welcoming the enchanting Lantern Parade to the celebrations. The parade which will include local primary school children, Santa and his elves, Frozen characters in their sleigh, Downpatrick Pipe Band and stilt walkers will leave the Down Arts Centre at 6pm.

Children will be able to participate in the free art workshop designing their own Frozen themed snowflakes in St Patrick Square or get their face painted.

St Patrick’s Grammar School will be singing songs from the popular Disney film Frozen which will be followed by the pyrotechnic switch on and the launch of helium balloons to the North Pole from 7pm. Don’t miss out on your opportunity to get a photograph taken with Frozen characters in the Snow Globe.

Whilst young ones go home to bed others can follow the Snow Queen back to Down Arts Centre where festive treats of mince pies and mulled wine will be on offer and Voices of Lecale will entertain.

Keeping in the Christmas spirit Translink will be putting on extra FREE buses at 7.45pm to Ardglass and Ballynahinch following the switch on.

Down District Council Chairman Cllr William Walker said: “I am really looking forward to the official switch on and the start of the Christmas season. The evening is inspired by the Disney film Frozen and I would encourage little ones to celebrate the theme and come dressed as their favourite character. Some of the shops are opening late so stay and have a bite to eat, Christmas tipple or pick up a Christmas gift for your loved ones.

“The Frozen Winter Wonderland at The Saint Patrick Centre is selling out fast! Be sure to get your ticket booked so you do miss out on this fairy-tale experience. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and hope everyone has a fantastic evening.”
