SOUTH Down MLA Caitriona Ruane has requested a meeting with Danske bank to discuss the closure of three branches in South Down.
Ms Ruane said: “The closure of the branches at Newcastle, Warrenpoint and Castlewellan is worrying development in the reduction of services in rural areas and while there is Internet banking available it is no substitute for local branches who know the local community and their needs. Local farmers and businesses have built up relationships over the years and these cannot be replicated by centralization of services.
“I have requested a meeting with Danske Bank to discuss these closures and the future of banking in the South Down especially given the fact that the ATM unit in Warrenpoint will also go.
“The high street especially in small towns and villages that serve the rural communities are being hit hard and we cannot afford to allow services to leave the area without fighting for their retention.”
