Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane has welcomed the meeting with representatives of Ulster Tennis to discuss the promotion of the sport across the North.
Ms. Ruane, a former Irish international tennis player, said: “Tennis is a great way to keep active and fit and is a high profile sport yet we need to develop more facilities across the North to facilitate the numbers of people who would wish to play the sport.
“We had a very positive meeting looking at ways to promote the sport and how we can build upon the successes already being enjoyed by Ulster Tennis.
“Also, we discussed the programmes where courts are situated in public parks across the North and how it can ensure more participation from every sector of society. We acknowledged the work that Ulster Tennis has carried out to engage with all tennis clubs and how we can facilitate more meetings to bring all clubs under this umbrella.
“It is important that the sport is also affordable to everyone if we are get more people from working class communities to take part in playing tennis as we need to dispel the myth that tennis is an exclusive middle class sport, tennis is for everyone.
“We have agreed to meet again in the future to revise progress and in the meantime I would encourage people to take up tennis as a great way to keep fit and healthy.”
