South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has welcomed news from the Department for Regional Development that it is now progressing to the next stage in the project to procure a ship builder for the new Strangford Ferry.

The Department has indicated that a contract will be awarded, subject to the availability of funding, later this year.

Ms Ritchie said: “I welcome the next step towards the provision of a new ferry, which will be a good boost for passengers of this service. I understand that measures will be provided on the new ferry to minimise noise and air pollution, and it is useful that these issues have been noted and addressed with regards to the new vessel.

“I have been making ongoing representations to the Department to seek a new vessel as soon as possible, and I will continue to press for the necessary funding to be put in place to allow for this vessel to be realised, which represents an exciting and valuable project for the area and for all of those who avail of the ferry service.”
