RGU Notes

Senior Men had a good performance against Saval at home under the lights on Friday evening winning by a goal. Hopefully the experience will set them up for another good display on Sunday 2nd at 2.00pm when they take on Warrenpoint in the penultimate scheduled league game of the season. A win would put them in a strong position for a promotion play-off place, and everyone’s support would be appreciated in what should also be their last home game of the season writes Michael Starkey. The RGU U-16’s travelled to Ballykinlar on Saturday afternoon to contest the B Championship semi-final against Cill Breachtain. In a hard –fought clash the Hoops just about did enough to prevail by 3 points, with the performance of the day coming from Jamal McQuoid in the defence. The final, which will be against Leitrim, is due to be played on Sunday 9th October. More details will follow closer to the time. After 2 reversals in their previous two league encounters with Carryduff and St. Pauls respectively the under 14’s produced one of the performances of the season to convincingly defeat their near neighbours Saul. RGU started like a freight train scoring 1-1 in the opening few minutes, the goal expertly taken by the ever improving Stevie McGhee. The remainder of the half ebbed and flowed and Saul pegged their way back into it leaving the half time score line RGU 1-2 to Saul 0-4. Spurred on by the close defeat 2 weeks previous in the Championship Semi Final the young Hoops produced a second half of football rarely seen at Pairc Tomas Russell.  They were the dominant force from the first whistle and never relinquished their 1 point lead. Indeed they showed class in systemically penetrating the Saul defense at will,  racking up an impressive 5-15.  This was the performance everyone involved in the team knew these lads had in them, and it provides a bright spark in what has been a very impressive year for the U-14’s.  Every player was given a run out at some stage and every one produced a performance of strength and fortitude.  If there was a prize for the performance of the season this was indeed it. RGU U-12’s started off their campaign in the Year 9 Feile on Sunday with a home match against Bredagh. In extremely tough weather conditions both teams struggled to put up scores, with Bredagh deservedly equalising with practically the last kick of the game. Two matches remain in the round robin stage against Bryansford and Kilcoo. Details will be texted out later in the week.
