RGU Notes

Senior men had a great victory on Sunday at PTR when they recorded a 2 point win over Liatroim. In a game of two halves they lead by 2 points at the break. They had it all to do in the second half against a very strong wind, but they dug deep, especially in the last ten minutes, when they were reduced to 14 men and conceded a late goal. Next up is Castlewellan at home on Friday evening. The senior presentation night will take place in the clubrooms immediately afterwards and everyone at the game is welcome to call in. There will be a finger buffet followed by the presentations and music by Red Biddy.  There will be no charge for the evening. The Senior Reserves put up a good performance on Friday night in Bredagh but struggled after one of their men was harshly sent off.  They are still sitting comfortably fourth in the table at this the half way stage.  Their next game is away to Ballyholland next Sunday. The U-12’s had another good day at Pairc Thomáis Uí Ruiséil on Sunday. Both the Firsts and Seconds recorded convincing wins against St Pauls. Despite the windy conditions which made it difficult for both teams, the Firsts put in a strong performance winning on a score-line of 9-7 to 1-4. The highlight was a wonderful point from Daniel Kelly, swung over from the left hand corner late in the second half. The Seconds also showed their potential, as they comprehensively put away their opponents on a score-line of 6-5 to 1-0. Again it is very encouraging to see the numbers attending training and matches, all 27 players getting meaningful game time on Sunday. Sunday proved to be a very good day for Kyran Smyth, as he recorded a hat-rick of wins for the Hoops when the senior team won against Laitroim . Training now on Tue and Thur evenings from this week onwards, 7-8.30pm. RGU U-14’s continue to improve under the watchful eye of mentors McCartan, Louden, Gracey & Hampton. A very polished display on Monday Night enabled them to see off a much bigger and more physical Castlewellan team. Despite the very obvious difference in physicality, the skills honed on the training ground came to the fore as the young lads put on a great display of accurate passing and shooting that eventually saw them win by a comfortable margin. The U-16 boys suffered a narrow defeat to Bryansford on Thursday evening in a friendly fixture at a windswept St Patrick’s Park. In what turned out to be a very useful exercise the lads played their best football this year and were unlucky to go down by a single point. Next up they face Castlewellan in the league on Thursday evening. The Under-10’s had a very enjoyable outing on Saturday with 24 players heading up to Bryansford for games against the host club as well as Castlewellan. Split on age basis the older boys had very good wins in their games and had a particularly tough battle against the Ford in what was a very well contested game marked by a very high skill level, with some great tackling, blocking and passing movements by both teams. In the end it was the superior marksmanship of Luka Walsh, Ruairi Quinn and Tom Smyth that saw the Hoops home allied to great defensive displays from Ryan Cassidy, Caolin Quinn and Eoin McMullan. The younger boys also displayed what they have been picking up in their weekly sessions as Ethan Breen, Matthew Rooney & Tom McNeill putting in some sterling work. Training continues on Sat mornings at 10.30 but we will also be going an additional session from next week, with training taking place on Tuesday evenings at 7pm, Under 8’s/10’s 12’s are reminded that bookings are now being taken for Cúl Camps at RGU in July.
