Restart Your Education At SERC

The South Eastern Regional College (SERC) has officially launched their Restart Education course which is designed for adult learners who have been out of education more than one year.

The event was held at the college’s Linen Room restaurant where guests, including a number of local community groups, listened to a presentation about SERC Access to Education courses and had the opportunity to discuss the course with current students.

Restart Education will allow students to achieve a Level 2 OCN qualification in further study skills covering maths, literacy, science, social science and study skills alongside personal skill building, exploring career options and career planning. The course will run for one year, twice a week.

Current access students Pearl Ashby, Janet McGreevy and Neil McTeer talked about their experiences to the community groups showing how far they have come and developed in their education and confidence. Pearl hopes to go onto university to study social work, while Neil would like to study criminology at Queen’s University Belfast. The students were very inspiring and enthusiastic when talking about their experiences at SERC.

Assistant Head of School for Access to Education, Elaine Bradley said: “We were very pleased to have so many representatives from community groups and partner organisations with us for the launch of Restart Education for adult returners and to have so many positive conversations about how we can work together for the benefit of some many in our area.

“Having piloted an introductory course last year, it was wonderful to hear from students on the night about how valuable it has been for their personal development, for their academic readiness to progress to other courses and for their self-esteem.

“We’re delighted to be able to widen the scope of the programme so that more adult students on all of our campuses can avail of the opportunity to achieve the qualifications necessary to pursue both vocational and academic courses within SERC and to ultimately gain careers and employment.

“So make it your time to shine with an Access course and come along to an Information Evening at your nearest campus. The information evenings will be held at 6pm at the Downpatrick campus on 12 April, Lisburn campus 13 April and Bangor campus on 14 April.
