Report Of Attempted Hijacking In Saintfield At Weekend

Police investigating the report of an attempted vehicle hijacking in Saintfield on Friday 5th February) are appealing for information and witnesses.

Police investigating the report of an attempted vehicle hijacking in Saintfield on Friday 5th February) are appealing for information and witnesses.

At 10.45pm, police received a report that approximately 10 minutes earlier a woman driving along Listooder Road was approached by a man standing in the middle of the road, at the junction of Old Grand Jury Road. The man is reported to have approached the vehicle and ordered the female driver to get out. 

Sergeant Nigel Donnelly said: “Thankfully, the woman managed to drive away, and she was uninjured, but this was a frightening experience for her. 

“Our enquiries in this incident are continuing, and I would appeal to anyone travelling on Listooder Road between 10.30pm and 10.40pm, and who saw any suspicious activity or anything out of the ordinary, to call the police.

“I would also appeal to anyone with information about this incident to get in touch with us by calling 101 and quote reference number 2050 of 05/02/21.”

Local Rowallene Councillors have said they are concerned at the alleged incident.

Cllr Billy Walker said: “This is a very worrying situation if a lone female driver can be stopped on a country road and be told to get out of her car.

“Drivers need to be more careful in the area and they should ensure especially at night that their car door is locked until they arrive safely to where they are going. Women especially need to be more vigilant.”

Cllr Robert Burgess said: “This must have been a difficult, unexpected and frightening experience for the car driver.”
