Police And Army Attend Suspicious Object In Killough

Police have been in attendance at a security alert in the Rossglass Road area of Killough following the discovery of a suspicious object.

A section of the Rossglass Road has been closed and a number of homes in The nineteenth century Shields ‘alm houses’ have been evacuated.

The ATO (Army Technical Officer) were tasked to the scene following the discovery this morning around 10am.

A neighbour living close by the alms houses in Killough where the incident too place explained: “Workmen helping to renovate the old houses that were in a poor state of repair from No’s 8 to 16 found a device under the floorboards I understand which had wires attached to it. The ATO seem to have been on the scene for quite some time.

“I heard two small sounds which sounded like explosions. The area has been sealed off.”

Police have blocked traffic running along the Rossglass Road to and from Killough.

A police statement later in the day explained that the security alert in the Rossglass Road area of Killough had ended and that police and ATO officers had examined the suspicious object which was found to be an explosive device and a quantity of ammunition.

The object has been taken away for further examination. Local residents then returned to their homes and the Rossglass Road was re-opened.

This was a viable device but which is believed to have been in place for a number of years.
