Celebrations at the Victorian Garden open day in the Downshire Estate, Downpatrick
Downpatrick Sinn Féin Councillors, Oonagh Hanlon and Philip Campbell, have praised the work being done at the Downshire Estate’s Victorian Garden as they attended its Open Day Celebrations on Friday.
Speaking after the event, Councillor Hanlon said: “It was uplifting and inspiring to hear people reflect on their experiences in the Garden and what it means to them.
“This space represents hope, recovery and growth to our community and is open to people of all ages and gardening abilities.
“Sinn Féin will continue to support the Garden and the vital role it plays in the local community.”
Councillor Campbell, who is also Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, praised the different groups and agencies that care for the Garden.
He said: “Groups include The Forest School, Recovery Shed, and Streamers Men’s Group who share the space with the Probation Board and Multi-Disciplinary Team for General Practice, as well as service users and staff.
“Tackling addiction and mental health issues through horticultural therapy stands as a living example of regrowth, connection, and recovery – from herbal tea workshops and self-care sessions, to planting trees and growing vegetables.
“The arts and crafts on display in the stalls were a testament to their creative talent.
“I want to congratulate all involved for their work in reclaiming this natural space for our community.”
