NMD Council Chair Supports Women’s Aid

Local Woman’s Aid Centres Benefit from Chairperson’s International Women’s Day Raffle

Newry Mourne and Down District Council Deputy Chairperson, Councillor Oonagh Magennis on behalf of the Council Chairperson, Councillor Cathy Mason, presented £1,000 each to Women’s Aid, Armagh and Down and Women’s Aid, Belfast and Lisburn.

Deputy Chairperson Oonagh Magennis presented Eileen Murphy, CEO Women’s Aid Armagh Down, with a donation from Newry, Mourne and Down Council.

The proceeds came from the raffle held at the Chairperson’s International Women’s Day event on 4 March 2022 in the Slieve Donard Hotel and Resort.

Chairperson, Councillor Cathy Mason said: “I am delighted to be in a position to present cheques to Women’s Aid who are on the front line in terms of dealing with individuals and families that find themselves in the most difficult of situations.

“Women’s Aid offers not just shelter but safety and peace of mind and continuous support for women and children who have suffered domestic abuse.

“I sincerely thank our sponsors Re-Gen Waste Ltd for their invaluable financial contribution and to all the businesses that sponsored prizes for the raffle. The day was a wonderful success in where we recognised, commemorated, and promoted women’s achievements in our society and was one of the highlights of my year as First Citizen.

“It is therefore only fitting that the proceeds of the raffle from that day are used to help, empower and build a future for vulnerable women and their families.”
