Chairperson’s Charity Ball Raises £22,000 for Local Charities

The Chairperson of Newry Mourne and Down District Council, Councillor Michael Savage, was delighted to present cheques to his nominated charities from the proceeds of his Charity Ball.

The ball was held in the Canal Court, Newry, on 3 February 2023 when over 300 guests turned out to support the Chairperson’s four chosen charities: the Simon Community, Southern Area Hospice Services, St Vincent de Paul and Suicide Down to Zero.

A grand total of £22,000 was raised from ticket sales, the raffle, and donations made on the night and on 10 May the Chairperson invited representatives from each of the charities to join him in Newry Civic Centre, Monaghan Row to present each with a cheque for £5,500.

Speaking at the event, Chairperson Councillor Michael Savage said: “I am delighted to be able to welcome these wonderful charities into the District Council Offices and present them with a contribution towards their great causes. 

“These charities are all fantastic organisations doing a great deal of work in our communities.

“As my term of office will soon conclude, I can safely say I had the most amazing experience. 

“It was a very special time for me to be out and about meeting so many wonderful organisations and outstanding individuals – the humility in our district never ceases to amaze me.

“I would like to once again take this opportunity to thank Keltbray, Norbrook, Regen, EDB Developments and Canal Court Hotel who so generously supported the charity ball.

“Also, I would also like to thank all those who sponsored raffle prizes. It is down to the kindness of businesses and community groups that I have been able to raise such an incredible amount of money, which I know the charities appreciate so much. 

“The night was a wonderful success and one of the highlights of my years as First Citizen.”
