Fly-tipping at our reservoirs putting a strain on resources.
NI Water is highlighting a growing problem with illegal dumping at a number of its sites, with the latest being large household items, including mattresses and wooden planks.
Brian McCalmont, Head of Water said: “We are calling for this illegal dumping to stop immediately.xa0 The latest rubbish has been discovered at one of our Service Reservoirs near Kilkeel.

“These sites are reservoirs that store our drinking water and serve the whole community. In light of water being essential throughout Covid-19, it is even more important to respect this, and to ensure our workers have unhindered access to our facilities.xa0
“Those responsible are not only breaking the law by dumping waste but are also creating a needless drain on resources for NI Water that could be better used to improve services. With Council facilities closed because of the coronoavirus pandemic, this is a selfish act that impacts on everyone.”
Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon added:xa0“This behaviour is not acceptable at any time but it is particularly reprehensible during the current health emergency when we see more than ever just how critical the essential supply of our drinking water is.
“This goes to the very heart of our society. Those responsible are obstructing access to facilities that store drinking water for the benefit of us all. I call on them to stop so that front line water staff can continue their vital work during this critical time.”
NI Water would appeal to members of the public to be vigilant and ask if they do notice anything to report the incident to the PSNI on 101 or on Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
