Commenting on the SDLP Youth’s support for continued EMA funding, chair Aaron Rice said, “The savage spending cuts and fee hikes being proposed by the Tory Coalition are all too familiar. A right-wing government who claim to be the party of the people are forcing the greed of the wealthy to be paid for by decent, hard-working families.

“The opening of this newly refurbished midwifery-led unit is good news for local women. “This will be the second freestanding midwife led unit to open in Northern Ireland. The Downe Hospital midwifery unit has already been very successful and many women are actively choosing to have their babies in midwife led units. I expect the Lagan Valley unit will be just as popular with mothers-to-be as it will provide high quality care and offer real choice. “The transfer from a consultant led inpatient service to the midwifery led service has been planned for some time. It is estimated that a large number of the 1,200 women each year who gave birth at Lagan Valley obstetric led unit, which only booked women with low to medium risk pregnancies, will be suitable to deliver in the new unit.” Services available at the new midwifery unit will include: community midwifery service; antenatal clinics, day assessment and inpatient midwifery service for low risk women including care during delivery. Current Maternity Service at Lagan Valley Lagan Valley Hospital currently provides a 24-hour consultant-led obstetric service for low to medium-risk patients. Services include: · Antenatal care;u2028· Intrapartum care (consultant-led);u2028· Postnatal care;u2028· Day assessment;u2028· Anomaly scans;u2028· Fetal medicine clinic;u2028· Breast feeding support;u2028· Home birth support group. Future Maternity Service Following withdrawal of consultant-led services today (2nd February), the following services will be provided: · Community Midwifery service;u2028· Antenatal Clinics at Lagan Valley including consultant-led clinics facilitated by UHD, RJMS;u2028· Day assessment;u2028· Inpatient midwifery service for low risk women including intrapartum (during delivery).]]>

DOWN County Museum has hosted the launch of the Holocaust Memorial Day event last Thursday (27th January).

The event featured a presentation on memories of the Holocaust by people from County Down who were either in Nazi concentration camps or who were involved in the liberation of those camps.

The event was organised by the Down County Museum in partnership with the Somme Heritage Centre who have been gathering oral history in relation to World War II including the concentration camps and their liberation. The event will be a rare opportunity to hear the testimony of people in County Down who witnessed at first hand the atrocities of the concentration camp system and their impact on millions of people in Europe.
