Hugh McCaughey, South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust Chief Executive attended with a team to make a presentation and respond to questions following the Council’s concerns over the Trust’s reform and modernisation proposals which were rubberstamped by the Health Minister. The meeting lasted over three hours and the questions and answers were many. Council officials are to look into another format of organising the meeting in possibly preparing questions in written format so that the business of the meeting can be dealt with more efficiently.

Dirty Dancing in exchange for glass bottles or jars. [caption id="attachment_20499" align="alignleft" width="285" caption="Laura Skillen, Alice O'Hare and Louise Roberts are admitted to a special screening of Dirty Dancing for the price of an old glass bottle! Receiving the unusual 'payment' at The Saint Patrick Centre is Councillor Maria McCarthy, left, Chair of Down District Council's Environment Committee."][/caption] Organised by Down District Council’s Environment Education Team in partnership with the Department of Environment, the scene at the ticket desk was reminiscent of days gone by when glass, a highly valuable resource, could be brought along to the local movie house and exchanged for a cinema ticket. Councillor Maria McCarthy, Chair of Down District Council’s Environment Committee said, “I am delighted that the Council has organised this exciting and innovative event to highlight the importance of recycling, not just to our environment but also to our economy. “All of the glass collected by Down District Council is reprocessed and recycled here in Northern Ireland which helps to reduce our environmental impact as a Council and provides valuable employment. “I would like to congratulate Environmental Services for all their hard work in organising a highly successful event.” Glass recycling has proved highly successful in Down district since its introduction in 1995. There are currently 31 bottle banks and three Household Recycling Centres in the district where glass can be taken for recycling. “The glass is collected by Down District Council and sent for processing where it is crushed into cullet and melted down with sand and other ingredients to make new glass. The entire glass recycling process takes place within Northern Ireland in only a few weeks.” To find out more about glass recycling or any other aspect of waste management please contact the Council’s Education Team on 028 4461 0843, email , or visit www.downdc.gov.uk.]]>

Under-10 Hurling – Castlewellan again fielded three teams in the Down indoor league. A total of twenty two players took part with two teams at De La Salle Downpatrick and one at Banbridge leisure centre. With three of the older players unavailable this week some of the younger lads stepped in and performed really well. All of the boys got plenty of game time. The only hiccup was the old man arriving late but thankfully ‘Hop a long’ passed a late fitness test was able to drive the bus. Under-10 Camogie – the indoor league started on Saturday past for our girls at this age group. They competed against Liatriom A and B, Bredagh and Bunscoil Dun Phadraig. The girls performed really well winning one game, drawing two and losing one. This was their first taste of playing opposition from further afield. The girls adapted very well and enjoyed themselves. Well done to them all. The girls playing on the day were; Niamh Gibney, Molly McAlinden, Clara Rogan, Aine Hawkins, Dianaimh O’Donnell, Emma, Aislinn and Emily. The girls are looking forward to the next day out.

th was the first opportunity for the RGU’s top young handballers to get a taste of the Ulster Championship. First up was Eoin McMullan in the U-12 singles who faced an opponent from Armagh. Although this was a step too far for Eoin, he is still only nine and the experience gained will be invaluable to him in the future. It is worth noting that he will still be able to play in this category for a further two years. In the U-12 doubles Ryan Steritt and Ronan Murphy faced Cavan, and they got off to a great start winning the first game. Cavan levelled it to one each and the crowd settled down to watch the tiebreaker. Cavan raced into an early lead but the RGU lads showed great character and fought their way back into it. In a final push Cavan got a few aces and went on to win 15-9. This was a great day out for the boys and their families, and hopefully in the near future we will see the RGU capture an Ulster Title. The weather is taking its toll on the pitches at the moment and it has been decided that both pitches will remain closed until 13th March, except for the street league on Saturday evenings. All training for next weekend will therefore take place at St Dillon’s Avenue. The lights will still be turned on on Tuesday evening from 7 PM to 8 PM for the U-16s and U-12s who will train outside the juvenile pitch on the bank. The seniors got their season off to a start on Sunday morning with a brisk training session. They will be getting together again on Monday evening. Under-14 football training continues on Saturday’s at 3.00pm with an additional indoor fitness session on Thursday evenings at 7.00 PM in the Clubrooms. The street league will also continue to take place on Saturday evenings at 6.00pm under the floodlights Set dancing continues on Tuesday nights at 7.30pm. Anyone interested just turn up or ring Johnny on 07710369509. For party bookings ring Brian on 07745496213. This week’s lotto numbers were 3, 20, 21, & 27. Three share £100 and next week’s jackpot is £3200.
