EDAC Notes: Jimmy's Ten Just Round The Corner
Stormont Estate, where over 260 primary school boys and girls took part writes Joe Quinn.
Among them were Eimear Connor and Aoife Cochrane who placed 14th and 25th respectively in the Girls race and Matthew and Andrew McGrattanxa0 who were 26th and 95th respectivelyxa0 in the Boys. This is clearly a course that suits Eimear as she showed her best form of the season and should do well in the final round of the McGrady Financial Services Junior Cross Country series on 12th March while Aoife is invariably consistent. It is just a pity more East Down athletes did not take part.
Protection Bond Call By McAleenan For Vacant Properties
That the Government forms a register of all housing developments which are approved by Planning but not suitable for adoption by DRD and that a Protection Bond is held to cover all eventualities.”
Councillor McAleenan said, “When a builder applies to the relevant statutory authorities for a housing development, he/she takes out a bond with the Roads Service.xa0 This bond ensures that the developer brings the infrastructure within the site up to a suitable level – a level which would allow the Roads Service for example to adopt the roads within the development into the public road network, thus taking over their maintenance, upkeep and their complete responsibility.xa0xa0 However many builders have received, and continue to receive, planning permission on the condition that the infrastructure will never be adopted.xa0 Measures shouldxa0be put in place to deal with such situations at the time of the granting of planning permission.
“These developments arexa0causing huge problems across Down District and further afield. If a street light goes out within this type of development – who is contacted?xa0 If a hole forms in the road, who is contacted?xa0 And lastly, if a member of the public were to fall on a broken kerb, who is contacted?
“I understand that individual management companies deal with queries such as these. However many residentsxa0in these developmentsxa0are notxa0equipped with the relevant contact details.xa0 This problem is exacerbated when the issues in one unadopted development start affecting that of a neighbouring development.
“There has to be policies and procedures in place for dealing with such issues, as they have become much more common in recent years.
“It is imperative that a register is complied and updated – a register which is mandatory.xa0 Such a register would contain emergency contact details for the persons responsible for the development in the absence of a statutory agency.xa0 We do not want to be faced with a network of deteriorating roads like there was inxa0days gone by- this simply cannot happen.xa0 It is up to the relevant authorities toxa0work together to ensure that thisxa0situation does notxa0spread andxa0deteriorate further.” she added.]]>

RGU Notes
junior handballers had mixed fortunes on Sunday 27th in the Ulster Championships. Kevin Polly and Hugh Dornan were beaten by a strong Monaghan pairing in the U-14 doubles. This was their first taste of action at this level and the experience will certainly stand by them in the future. Niall Quinn and Sam Burns had a better day, and they have earned their place in the final against Armagh in two weeks time, after beating Cavan in a tough game.

Enright Welcomes Action In Ardglass On Drugs, Underage Drinking And Anti-social Behavioiur
Green Party Councillor Cadogan Enright has spoken out following the recent Community Safety Partnership meeting in Ardglass during which residents reported being able to buy “whatever you want” in terms of drugs in the village.
He said, ‘I believe there are two serious issues concerning residents the xa0most. The first is the issue of drugs being sold in the town, and at the carpark at the Marina which got a special mention, and secondly,xa0young people being caught up in anti-social drinking. They cause disturbances in the areas where they hang out and this leads to nuisance, vandalism, noise and the debris of bottles and cans.
