[caption id="attachment_23294" align="alignleft" width="209" caption="Gareth Sharvin, SDLP candidate in the Council election for the Downpatrick area, is calling for more social housing in Killough."][/caption] Mr Sharvin said,xa0xa0“I have been approached by a number of people living in the Killough area who are interested in social housing. Killough is a lovely peaceful village with a great sense of community. There is a low turn over of Housing Executive houses in the area.

“Many local people are keen to live in the community and raise their family there but are spending increasing time on the waiting list for housing.

“I have made strong representations to the Department for Social Development to request the Housing Executive and Housing Associations review waiting lists in Killough with the objective of a new build housing schemes in the area,” he said.

[/caption] “There are fascinating sites such asxa0the Loughinisland Churches, the Annadorn Dolmen and the Ballynoe Stone Circle, to name but a few, which could attract so many more visitors from outside and within Northern Ireland if more was done to promote them. “Take the example of the Annadorn Dolmen. Few people know it exists, the site is not easily accessible and there is no information sign to let you know anything about the site itself when you arrive. Yet these hidden gems of our past history can be part of the xa0mechanism to reinvigorate our local economy by attracting visitors. He added, “I believe that with our scenic countryside, historical sites and places of interest we have so much potential to attractxa0governmentxa0investment and visitors as a means to support our neglected local economy.xa0Promoting our historic sites is also very for developing our own local identity and sense of history. “It will be one of my xa0priorities if electedxa0to work with the Cultural and Economic Development Department at councilxa0to continue to and seek better ways to promote our local and rural tourism product,” said Mark McCormick.]]>

Doran Says Ballymartin Is Forgotten Village

SPEAKING xa0after a recent canvas of Ballymartin, Sinn Féin’s Council candidate in the Mournes, Sean Doran has said that if elected, one of his priorities would be to campaign for additional resources for the village. He added, xa0“While I accompanied my party colleague Councillor Willie Clarke in an extensive canvas of the village, xa0many residents made clear their disillusionment with the people who have represented them on Newry and Mourne District Council. “There are eight housing estates in the village with many young families and a number of well populated side roads, but there is no community hall, no play areas and not even a swing or slide available. To compound matters further, the local beach is being polluted by untreated raw sewage.xa0 The Post Office has been closed for several years now and there is no longer a village shop meaning local people have to travel to Kilkeel or Annalong to get even the most basic groceries. “Although the local GAA club do sterling work in the area, the children still have to cross a busy main road to get to the pitch and there is not as much as a pedestrian crossing to keep them safe.xa0 The lack of facilities leads to anti social-behaviour and regardless if I get elected on May the 5th I will be lobbying for improvements in all these matters.”]]>

SINN Féin Assembly candidate Councillor Willie Clarke has called for the gate which links the Dunwellan Park, Beech Field and Elm Grove estates in Newcastle to be locked at night. Councillor Clarke made his comments after residents in the area complained about anti-social that was affecting all of these residential areas and having visited the scene where a number of windows were broken last week. He xa0said, “There is considerable anger in the community about the current situation and the fact that the access across the bridge is being used as an escape route after carrying out attacks on people and their property. “The introduction of gates that are locked after dark would reduce the rising number of crime related incidents in the area, and following discussions with the police and the Chairperson of the Down Community Safety Partnership, Councillor Mickey Coogan, I have asked that this request is tabled at a future meeting of the Partnership. “I know that many residents are in support of this measure and some are willing to open and shut the gate as I am aware that people use the access to walk their dogs in the Islands Park at night. With a little pre-planning this can be accommodated by the Dunwellan Community Group and other responsible residents who could be designated key holders.”]]>
