Newcastle Group Sewing For Charity Help Cancer Patients

A local sewing group from Newcastle, County Down, has devoted time and talent to create items that will bring comfort and support to cancer patients in the Ulster Hospital.

Newcastle Sewing for Charity is a group of passionate and talented sewers who have been working hard to produce items such as syringe driver bags, mastectomy cushions and seatbelt pads which will really enhance the comfort of patients who have recently undergone cancer surgery.

The group very kindly recently donated similar items to the Macmillan Cancer Unit for patients.

The group meets regularly so everyone can share their love of sewing and work on different projects benefiting patient care by upcycling donated material into various healthcare items.

Their current project is making bonding squares, softies, quilts and incubator covers for use in Neonatal Units across Northern Ireland.

The sewing enthusiasts also make a range of items for Summer and Christmas sales in Newcastle, with all proceeds donated to local charities.

Newcastle Sewing for Charity member, Pauline Mulholland said: “We love sewing and are delighted to be able to make a small difference to adults on their healthcare journey.

“We want to make sure that our items are not only functional, but also beautiful and uplifting.

“We hope that they will bring a smile to someone’s face and remind them that they are not alone in their journey.”

Thanking Newcastle Sewing for Charity for their generous donations, Ward Manager, Angela Berry added: “I would like to thank the group for gifting these beautiful cushions, seatbelt pads and syringe driver covers as these will provide a beautiful aesthetic support for our patients.

“Many have gone through a bad time and these knitted items will also hopefully help make their car journeys that little bit more comfortable.”
