South Down MLA Andrew McMurray asks questions about offshore renewable industry
South Down Alliance MLA Andrew McMurray recently raised questions about the developing offshore renewables in Kilkeel Harbour and ports across County Down with the Economy Minister, Dr Caoimhe Ardhibald.

During an Economy Question Time at the Assembly, South Down Alliance MLA Andrew McMurray asked the Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald how she plans to support the development of offshore renewables at Kilkeel Harbour and the surrounding area.
He also asked the Minister how she was working with neighbouring jurisdictions and Europe to ensure that those in the offshore maritime industry remained competitive and at the forefront of their industry.
It comes as the Department for the Economy launched a public consultation on the Offshore Renewable Energy Action Plan (OREAP) and how these developments could impact the ports in the County Down area.
Andrew McMurray said: “Diversifying our marine economy is key to the economic future of fishing ports along the South Down coast, and offshore renewables will play a crucial role in this.
“They are also essential to our efforts to bring down carbon emissions, meet our climate change targets and increase energy security.
“A clear strategy from the Minister is required. Together with my party’s Economy spokespersons, David Honeyford MLA and Kate Nicholl MLA, I will develop a response to this consultation to ensure that the interests of fishing ports in my constituency are heard.
“I look forward to engaging with the industry and shall continue to work and advocate for our local marine industry.”
