McKevitt Says Stay Safe During Severe Weather

SDLP representatives in South Down are urging people to stay safe during treacherous weather conditions.

South Down MLA Karen McKevitt and Crotlieve Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick commented when visiting the scene of a house fire in Mayobridge which began after an electricity pole collapsed on top of houses in Saint Anne’s Terrace.

Mrs McKevitt said: “A great deal of damage was caused by gale force winds during the night.xa0 Many homes were without electricity, fallen trees have blocked roads and in this particular instance two homes have been evacuated after an electricity pole fell on the properties.xa0 All the occupants are safe but sadly their homes were destroyed. xa0xa0dn_screen

“We have been in contact with Northern Ireland Electricity and Roads Service and they are making every effort to deal with all reports. xa0A weather warning remains in place for today so I would urge everyone to only make journeys if absolutely necessary.xa0 Stay vigilant, stay safe.

Crotlieve Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick was also on hand in Mayobridge helping those affected by the weather. Councillor Fitzpatrick said: “I met with the residents of Saint Anne’s Terrace this morning along with my party colleague Karen McKevitt. This is a very hard timexa0 for the people who have lost their homes but I know the xa0Mayobridge community will provide them with whatever support they need.
