McKevitt Says Further Improvements At Dangerous Junction Needed

South Down MLA Karen McKevitt (SDLP) has said that “the latest accident at the A2 junction with the Old Warrenpoint Road, which sadly resulted in the death of a Newry woman, authorities must ficus on implementing further improvements at this dangerous junction.”

dn_screenMs McKevitt was speaking after convening a meeting of Roads Service, Translink, PSNI and local council representatives on the issue. She added: “Following the tragic accident on the A2 only weeks ago, it was crucial that statutory agencies were brought together to plan a way forward to make this stretch of road safer for motorists and nearby residents. I convened a meeting of Translink, PSNI and local council representatives with a view to progressing the issue as quickly as possible. “I am pleased that Roads Service now plans to open a public consultation on measures to improve safety at the junction. Among the options under consideration are; closing access to the road from the A2 Newry Bound, installing speed cameras and reducing the local speed limit. “It’s vital that the public have their say on this and get involved in the campaign to save lives in this area. If anyone needs any assistance responding to the consultation, which is expected to take place in September, they can get in touch with me through my office and we’ll be happy to help.”
