McKevit Praises Irish Open Volunteers

McKevitt pays tribute to volunteers who have promoted Northern Ireland globally.

Culture, Arts and Leisure Spokesperson Karen McKevitt MLA (SDLP) has paid tribute to volunteers at the Irish Open and other events who have raised the profile of the North as a vibrant destination for tourists and businesses alike.

Mrs McKevitt MLA said: “Over the next few days, we celebrate Volunteer Week. This is a time for us all to reflect on the tremendous effort and inspiring contribution that volunteers have made to local events that have catapulted Northern Ireland onto the world stage for all the right reasons.

“That was once again the case at the weekend when the world’s elite golfers descended on Newcastle as the Irish Open came to town. The event and the investment in our local economy would not have been possible without the hard work of volunteers who gave freely of their time, energy and skills to create such a resounding success. They deserve our appreciation and thanks.

“Our thanks must also go to those who supported the Giro d’Italia and the World Police and Fire Games over recent years. They have provided us with the opportunity to showcase the welcoming, friendly and successful face of Northern Ireland to a global audience. We remain in their debt.

“And I also want to pay tribute to the work of organisations such asxa0Volunteer Now who have facilitated, trained and organised so many volunteers for these events over the last number of years. Their professional support has contributed to the volunteer experience and to the success of so many sporting and cultural events.

“I would encourage anyone thinking of volunteering in the future to jump in with both feet and enjoy the experience. It’s a chance to learn new skills, meet new people and make a contribution to the success of our communities. It’s certainly something you wont regret.”
