Newry Mourne and Down District Councillor Colin McGrath has welcomed support by the new supercouncil of his proposal to have the majority of the recently damaged crossgar play park opened as soon as next week.

Commenting, the Downpatrick SDLP councillor said: ‘This is an important community facility for the people of crossgar, especially local children, and one that needs to be opened as soon as possible.

“I appreciate that some paperwork and red tape is inevitable to ensure the recovery of costs and to prevent an unnecessary bill for rate payers but this must not prohibit the use of the park by local children.

“There has been some discussion that the community might have to fundraise to fix this facility and I find this unfair… I think council needs to do all it can to have this park repaired and to burden the local community with such costs.

“I am sure that the majority portion of this park can be opened quickly and have asked council to pursue the matter with the insurance company to prevent any unnecessary delay in reopening this community facility,” added Cllr McGrath.
