The SDLP’s Colin McGrath MLA and Mournes Councillor Laura Devlin have commented of the issue of dog fouling. They said a minority of dog walkers need to show better responsibility to the neighbours and pets.

“The issue of dog fouling and pet control is one which continues to be raised with elected representatives from all over the North. For whatever reason this matter caused by a minority of the public continues and shows no signs of easing.

on all dog owners to behave responsibly and pick up after their dogs and
not let them run loose off the lead.

“Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in Newcastle particularly the issue has become heightened. I would appeal to dog walkers who are not picking up after their pets. And also those allowing them off the leash in areas where people are using more for daily walks.”

“I have reported the severity of this matter to the council and have asked that this be addressed as a matter of urgency.  If we see the awful occurrence where someone gets sick as a result of the dog fouling – particularly if it gets in their eye – this will only place a further strain on an already stretched health service and potentially expose members of the public to the COVID-19 strain.

“The only way we are going to beat Covid-19 is if we work together.  This means the minority of dog owners who are not adhering to best practice need to support their pets and neighbours.

‘If you do need to leave your home to walk your dog then I ask you to show courtesy to those around you. Do not put other lives at danger through irresponsible practices.

“And Newry Mourne and Down District Council are going to have to live up to their responsibilities here as well. If it means reverting to previous policy to actually install dog waste bins in key areas or look at new means of cleaning dog waste then every eventuality needs to be considered.”

Councillor Devlin alo added: “The key areas affected are residential areas such as Marguerite, Shan Slieve, Rowley Meadows, Dunwellan Park, and along Park Lane. Also along the promenade and along the Main Street. A minority of dog owners are evidently not picking up after their dogs and disposing of in the proper way.

“This is made worse by the minority of dog owners who are letting their dogs off the leash in these areas. I would encourage them to make use of the leash as our daily walks need to be enjoyed by everyone.”
