Matheson Says Ballynahinch By-Pass Needs To Progress

Alliance MLA Nick Matheson Calls on Minister for Update on Ballynahinch Bypass

Alliance MLA Nick Mathison has submitted a written question to the Minister for Infrastructure, requesting an update on the Ballynahinch Bypass.

Alliance MLA Nick Matheson is calling on the DfI to make progress with the Ballynahinch Bypass.

This crucial project, aimed at diverting traffic away from Ballynahinch town centre for those travelling between Belfast and Newcastle, was paused by the Department in August 2023 due to financial constraints.

Since taking office in February 2024, the Minister has expressed support for the project but has yet to provide any updates or indicate that his Department is progressing with it.

Nick Mathison said: “The Ballynahinch Bypass is a critical infrastructure project. Ongoing delays pose serious safety risks in the town centre due to rising congestion and traffic volume, highlighted by the tragic death of a pensioner in April.

“I will continue to press the Minister on the urgent need to advance this project.”

Cllr Tierna Howie (Rowallane) added: “Rowallane councillors met with the Minister in June to share our concerns and highlight the importance of delivering this project.

“The Ballynahinch Bypass is crucial for enhancing safety, easing congestion, promoting active travel with cycleways, and providing a park & share facility. I will work alongside my Assembly colleagues to advocate for its completion.”

In a recent strategic overview, the DfI Minister released a framework for key infrastructure projects and the priority for building the Ballynahinch Bypass was considered low underpinned by the financial cost.
