On the road to healing with Mary-Jane Burns

Mary-Jane Burns’ life has had a few twists and turns but it has taken her to a place where she is now happy and helping improve the lives and health of others in her community..

Mary-Jane is a compassionate and practising alternative therapist with a diploma in Systematic Kinesiology having built up a solid reputation in this area.

In her early life having previously worked as a chef in a high stress environment, Mary-Jane struggled with dyslexia and health challenges causing her to seek answers within the complementary health industry.

She was so impressed with the results of her personal kinesiology experience that in 2007 she became a qualified Kinesiologist. From that point on, she realised that she could help others in the way that she had been helped and embarked on a range of specialist training to help people with complex health issues.

Mary-Jane Burns provides a range of alternative health therapies including kinesiology.

Speaking to Down News, Mary-Jane said: “I offer a range of therapies that can suit even the most time-starved client as well as providing more in-depth one-to-one sessions. I am based around the Downpatrick area. My sessions can include Advanced Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), a form of counselling intervention that draws on various theories of alternative medicine including acupuncture, neuro-linguistic programming, energy medicine, and Thought Field Therapy (TFT).

“I’m an Advanced Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) practitioner. I love EFT because in sessions I can teach you involve techniques best suited to you for self use .I am also an experienced facilitator guiding groups who have no previous experience of EFT so that they too can enjoy the benefits of this highly effective technique.

“Alternatively, I can use Metamorphic Technique, a gentle form of foot, hand and head massage which draws on reflexology in its theory and approach, in addition to Raindrop Technique which uses Organic Aromatherapy Oils. This approach aims to bring balance and transformation by supporting the body’s systems on an emotional and physical level through a relaxing back massage.”

“Also, I use meditation. This is a practice in which we aim to get past our “thinking” mind and move into a deeper state of relaxation and awareness. For some people guided meditation helps to focus the mind’s attention clearing the way for a better understanding ourselves.”

Her latest therapy technique is called Dissolve and Resolve. It involves working with emotions and benefits the mind and body from the cellular release of emotional issues. By adopting such a broad range of therapies to help calm the minds and bodies of her clients, Mary-Jane hopes that all of her clients can de-stress, a fundamental component of good health.

“I trained originally as a chef/cook and spent over 20 years in the catering industry including catering management. Catering can generally be a stressful industry to work in. This has given me skills in running restaurant’s, kitchens ( UTV also needed outdoor catering at times), care home kitchens, preparing school meals in central kitchens, being Abbeyfield’s house keeper in Belfast and catering events that where required in the styles of the various establishments I worked in,” added Mary-Jane.

“I have also worked in the housekeeping department of hotels. All this has given me skills knowing what will fit in a given space when working in companies or attending events with the knowledge of all the equipment required in the background for everything to run smoothly. I can think on my feet when a “hic up” occurs and adapt what is available and be flexible in the circumstances remaining calm.

“Unfortunately, as I said, I am dyslexic. This created significant stress while I was at school. it eventually led to  my health challenges such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome and anxiety. I then discovered Systematic Kinesiology was one of the solutions to my health problems. I was so impressed by the results that I became a qualified Kinesiologist in 2007 so that others could benefit in the same way that I have. This led to on-going specialist training to help people with complex health issues.

Mary-Jane Burns enjoys her work in the wider Downpatrick area as an alternative therapist.

“Since I became self-employed I have attended many health shows and have also worked at many pamper events.”

Mary-jane explained that ss stress, depression and anxiety pose considerable health risks and are debilitating to individuals, she also works with these issues and it has become one of her areas of expertise.

She added: “When in the low mood states, communication and interaction with others suffers. This is a loss to themselves, family, friends and the wider community. When we are in survival mode our creativity and feelings of wellbeing suffer.

“The emotional / mental wellbeing side of illness is often not dealt with in any meaningful way.

“Addressing this area is often  the starting point on the road to recovery. I look at the individual holistically – the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing to be fully effective.

“Often I work or volunteer with charities while also being self-employed as an alternative therapist.

“I have also  been a Director on the board of several Community Interest Companies as I enjoy the social enterprise, not-for-profit way of business.”
