Local Pupils To Run In Flahavan Cross Country League

Local ‘oat-letes’ of the future launch Flahavan’s Porridge Primary School Cross Country League

Lucy Foster from Spa Primary School and Lauren Madine from St. Brigid’s Primary School are going for gold with Flahavan’s Porridge and Commonwealth Youth Champion, Aaron Sexton at the launch of the 2017/2018 Flahavan’s Porridge Primary School Cross Country League at a special training session on Portstewart Strand.

Pupils from schools in County Down will be competing in the Flahavan Porridge Primary School Cross Country League.

Fresh from his success at the Commonwealth Youth Games, Aaron is the official Ambassador for the League, and will share his experiences as a 200m sprinter and Ulster and Irish Schools Rugby International with the young athletes.

The 2017-2018 season is set to be the biggest yet, with over 200 schools expected to register – building on the 6,500 pupils who took part last year.

Speaking at the launch, about his new role, Aaron said: “As a young person in sport, I understand the importance of having exposure to sport early on – which is exactly what the League does.  I took part in the League when I was in primary school, so you could say I’m coming back to my ‘grass-roots’ through my role as ambassador!

“I’ve learned that sport and nutrition go hand in hand, and as an athlete competing across a number of disciplines, it is very important to have a healthy diet, so my role as the Flahavan’s Ambassador is the perfect fit.  I can’t wait to get started, and look forward to the coming rounds.”

Brand Marketing Manager, for Flahavan’s Porridge Moya Verling, said: “This is our seventh year of working with Athletics Northern Ireland, and the legacy of the League is an important factor in our sponsorship.  In that time thousands of young runners have ‘taken to the track’ and got a taste for athletics – including Aaron.

“Aaron is the perfect example of a rounded athlete, who had a talent that was nurtured and developed from a young age.  He is trained by his dad in North Down, and as a seventh generation family business, the importance of family is a value we share. We’re excited for the League to get off to a ‘racing start’ this year with Aaron!”

The 2017 / 18 League will see primary schools from across seven regions: Southern Area, Fermanagh Area, Co. Down, Causeway Coast, Co. Tyrone Area. Co. Antrim and North West take part.
