Local Heroes In The Spotlight For The Annual Civic Awards

Civic Awards Return to Shine a Light on Local Heroes in Newry Mourne and Down

Residents across Newry, Mourne and Down are being encouraged to help uncover the inspirational people and groups making a difference in their communities as nominations open for the Council’s Annual Civic Awards.

Launched by Newry Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Glyn Hanna, the awards recognise individuals, volunteers, young people, organisations and community champions whose efforts help strengthen communities, improve lives and make the district a better place to live, work and visit.

Under the banner of #CelebratingWHO, this year’s campaign asks a simple question: Who has made a difference to you?

Whether it is a volunteer giving up their time, a young person leading by example, a group bringing people together or an individual quietly supporting others behind the scenes, the Civic Awards provide an opportunity to give them the recognition they deserve.

Speaking at the launch, Chairperson Councillor Glyn Hanna said: “Every community has people who make a real difference, often without expecting recognition. They are the people organising activities, supporting neighbours, helping local causes and creating opportunities for others.

“The Civic Awards are an opportunity to say thank you and to shine a spotlight on those whose generosity, commitment and community spirit help make Newry Mourne and Down such a special place.

“I would encourage everyone to take a few minutes to nominate someone who deserves to be recognised.”

The Chairperson Newry Mourne and Down Council, Councillor Glyn Hanna visits Mourne Stimulus one of his chosen charities, front row l-r Heather Wilson, Marina Joyce, Council Chairperson, Councillor Glyn Hanna, Joanne McVerry, William Housaton, back row Bronagh Trainor Community Fund Raiser and Gemma Phillips DCW Care Worker.

This year’s Civic Awards will also support the Chairperson’s chosen charities, Mourne Stimulus and Heartbeat NI. Mourne Stimulus provides opportunities for adults with learning disabilities to develop skills, confidence and independence, while Heartbeat NI supports children and adults living with congenital heart disease and their families.

As part of the celebrations, Councillor Hanna will host a charity raffle on the evening of the awards, with all proceeds shared between the two organisations.

The Chairperson recently met representatives from his charities to launch this year’s fundraising initiative and encourage support for the vital work they carry out across the community.

Chairperson Councillor Glyn Hannah added: “I am particularly pleased that this year’s awards will also support my chosen charities, Mourne Stimulus and Heartbeat NI.

“Both organisations make a profound difference to the lives of local people and I look forward to raising funds for these worthy causes on the evening of the awards.”

Nominations open on Monday 12 October and can be submitted through the online form available on the Council website: www.newrymournedown.org/chairpersons-civic-awards.

Residents, voluntary organisations, community groups and elected representatives are all invited to put forward nominations.

The nomination period closes on Sunday 25th October 2026.

Successful nominees will be contacted during the week commencing Monday 2nd November, with award recipients announced at a special Civic Awards ceremony on Friday 13th November 2026 at the Slieve Donard Hotel, Newcastle.
