SIX local companies have taken the first steps in their journey towards achieving the prestigious ‘Investors in People’ (IiP) Award, with the support of Down District Council, the Department for Employment and Learning and ES Consultants.

Representatives from each of the participating companies: Kane Heating Limited, Saints Gourmet Food, EcoSeeds, Alternative Heat Limited, Saints Deli and Blue Fin Software joined Down District Council Chairman, Councillor Mickey Coogan, at the Millbrook Lodge Hotel, Ballynahinch on Thursday 31 January for the launch of the new programme for 2013.

Speaking at the event, Councillor Coogan said: “The benefits of becoming an ‘Investor in People’ are significant, and the group programme provides an excellent opportunity for local organisations to receive support from a registered IiP Specialist. Down District Council through its partnership with DEL will subsidise the programme to provide an affordable solution to helping our local small and medium-sized companies to achieve this standard. ES Consultancy will deliver the programme through a package of workshops and onsite support at a pace that suits the needs of local companies.”

Tim Devine, Head of Management Development Branch within DEL, said, “We are again delighted to work in partnership with Down District Council to offer this programme to local SME’s in the Down Council area. Several previous programmes have resulted in a large number of accreditations and we are confident that this current group of organisations will achieve their targeted business improvements and receive their awards also.”

Across the UK, some 40,000 organisations of all sizes, employing approximately 7.5 million people, are working within the IiP framework.  Since 1994, some 1,500 organisations in Northern Ireland have achieved IiP accreditation, boosting their competitive position and resulting in better motivated employees.  Down District Council was the first council in Northern Ireland to achieve IiP silver status.
