Líofa Celebrates First Birthday

Sonas Ort a Líofa!

Líofa, the campaign to encourage people to become fluent in Irish, is celebrating its first birthday today ( 5 September).

Culture Minister, Carál Ní Chuilín has announced that the milestone will be marked by a party in Custom House Square on Saturday September 22.

Announcing the line-up for the party in the Square, Carál Ní Chuilín said: “ Is iontach an dul chun cinn atá déanta le bliain anuas ó thaobh fhorbairt na Gaeilge de. What a great year this has been for the development of the Irish language. I have been very encouraged by the 2,300 people who have joined me to become Líofa by 2015.

“To celebrate everyone is invited to Líofa’s first birthday party in Custom House Square. Join me on Saturday afternoon, 22 September for music from Goitse, Nodlaig Brolly, JJ Ó Dochartaigh and Cór Loch Lao and look out for entertainment from Ariel Killick, Giggles the clown and Fanzini Brothers who will make this a party not to be forgotten.

“There will also be street entertainers and characters as well as a bouncy castle and face painting. Come along and enjoy this free event whether you have any Irish or not and learn more about Líofa or simply enjoy the ceol, craic agus cuideachta in the heart of Belfast.

“The Irish language is our language and part of our culture and heritage.

“It is something to be cherished and promoted. Líofa aims to encourage every citizen – regardless of their background or level of expertise – to embrace the inclusivity and enrichment of the Irish language. Níl amhras orm go dtiocfaidh rath agus bláth ar Líofa san am atá le teacht. Over the next year I have no doubt that Líofa will continue to grow from strength to strength.

“Lá Breithe Sona a Líofa!

Happy Birthday Líofa!”
