Mens Shed in Killyleagh opens up with around 30 members
In recent past years enquiries to see if there was any interest in forming a Men’s Shed in the Killyleagh area was initiated by Killyleagh Community Association (KCA).
“But at the time – just prior to Covid – there was interest, but no-one available at the time to take on a lead role, so the plans were shelved, then Covid intervened in all our lives”, said Mark Turley, Killyleagh and District Mens Shed (KADMS) chair.
“During the past few months, the idea again surfaced, this time with support from the three local churches as well as KCA and others, and several information sessions and breakfasts were held, which attracted a good response.
“This resulted in a group of approximately 30 men expressing a strong interest and signing up, the formation of a committee, and trustees, and the successful location of premises to see the initiative on it’s way, as well as donations of some furniture and equipment, from local businesses and individuals.
“Presently, the committee and trustees are in the process of registering the group as a registered charity and applying for funding to make the premises.”
The old J M Martin’s Garage in Cross Street, has been kindly loaned for around a year until The Shed become established by local businessman Gabriel Bell, is fit for purpose.

Trustee Ken Taid said: “One of our members, Richardt Kruger, a keen wood turner, has been Shed helping members in recent weeks at his home workshop, tutoring them in the craft of wood turning and lathe work, and was presented this morning (Sunday 11th May ) by Shed Chair, Mark Turley, with a presentation mug in gratitude for his support and willingness to share his knowledge.
“The Killyleagh & District Men’s Shed is now part of the Men’s Shed network.”
Ken added: “This is an international association of similar sheds, across the world, where people can come together in mutual support of each other both physically and mentally, bringing men together where they can socialise and share their company and concerns.
“It also uses their combined and individual skills to remain active and occupied following illness or retirement. Anyone over 18 wishing to learn new skills is welcome.
“The trustees and committee are grateful to the Killyleagh Churches as well as KCA and other local businesses for their support during these early stages of our development by providing venues and refreshments etc as well as arranging the Men’s Shed Breakfast and information sessions.”
