Holy Cross Kilkeel pupils take action to cut plastic waste by using reusable plastic bottles
Pupils at Holy Cross PS Kilkeel in Co Down are doing their bit for the environment by joining NI Water’s “Refillution” campaign, aimed at reducing single-use plastic.
The initiative has seen students receive reusable water bottles from NI Water and pledge to switch from disposable plastic bottles to refilling with tap water.

The Refillution campaign, launched in 2019, is designed to tackle plastic pollution and protect Northern Ireland’s rivers and seas.
To date, more than 60,000 reusable bottles have been distributed to schools across the region.
Northern Ireland uses around 420 million single-use plastic bottles every year.
By switching to re-usable bottles, pupils are helping to reduce the amount of waste that can end up in the environment.
As well as reducing plastic waste, the campaign highlights the environmental benefits of tap water.
Bottled water is estimated to be around 900 times more carbon intensive than tap water, meaning small changes in daily habits can have a big impact.
Pat McCauley, Education Officer with NI Water said: “We’re delighted to see pupils getting involved in the Refillution campaign.
“By switching to reusable bottles, young people can make a real difference in reducing plastic waste and helping to protect our environment for future generations.”
