SuperValu and Centra have once again teamed up with local County Armagh supplier Gilfresh and will be selling pumpkins across their network of stores this October with 50p from each sale going to their charity partner Action Cancer, for the second year running.

The retail brands have a long-standing partnership with local NI charity Action Cancer and are calling on their customers to get behind their latest fundraising drive during what has been a difficult time for charities.

Desi Derby, Marketing Director at SuperValu and Centra NI, said: “It has been a challenging year for everyone, but as restrictions have eased, we know consumers will be looking forward to taking part in more activities this Halloween, whether that be decorating their homes, dressing up or carving pumpkins.

“Thanks to the support of our fantastic retailers and customers over the years, we have been able to keep the Action Cancer Big Bus on the road. This is a vital service which has helped with the early detection of breast cancer among many women across Northern Ireland. However, the pandemic has made normal fundraising activities more difficult than before, and our charity partner needs our support now more than ever. Hopefully, with the help of our customers buying a pumpkin in store, we will be able to raise much-needed funds.”

Gareth Kirk, CEO of Action Cancer: “It has certainly been a challenging 18 months for charities and healthcare providers and while we have adapted how our services are delivered, the impact and difference our services continue to make in terms of saving lives and supporting people living with cancer, hasn’t changed.

“This is another fantastic fund-raising initiative from SuperValu and Centra and we are extremely grateful to them and their customers for their support, which will allow us to continue to deliver our life-saving services and support those who really need help.”

SuperValu and Centra have been partnering with Action Cancer since 2001 and to date have raised £3.2 million – one of the largest amounts ever by a company for an individual charity in Northern Ireland.
