Hazzard seeks clarity on fishing fund access for County Down fleet
South Down Sinn Féin MP Chris Hazzard has written to British Secretary of State Hilary Benn, seeking assurances that the British government’s £360 million Fishing and Coastal Growth Fund will be accessible to the County Down fishing fleet.
The South Down MP was speaking following last week’s announcement of the new investment package, which comes in the wake of an agreement between the British government and the European Union (EU).

“The new fund announced yesterday for fishing – investing in new technology, equipment, fleet upgrades, training and skills — must target investment where it is needed and matters most,” Mr Hazzard said.
He added: “I have written to British Secretary of State Hilary Benn to request confirmation and further detail on the investment opportunities outlined in the deal.
“Brexit has been disastrous for local fishermen.
“It is vital that the County Down fleet can access modernisation funds that were lost when the North was forced to leave the EU.
“The British government must set out clearly how coastal communities will benefit from the investment earmarked for new community facilities, improved transport links and long-overdue investment in fishing and marine apprenticeships.
“Sinn Féin will continue to speak up for our fisheries and work to ensure their needs are both supported and protected.”
