Recovery scheme required for Downpatrick says Hazzard

Sinn Féin MP for South Down Chris Hazzard said that a significant recovery scheme is required to get Downpatrick back on its feet.

The South Down MP was speaking as Downpatrick town centre continues to be covered by flood water into its third day.

Chris Hazzard said: “There is devastation in towns and villages right across County Down from Newry right up to Downpatrick with flooding this week.

“Many dozens of businesses and homes have been destroyed.

“Local traders and staff are left shell shocked… this is a cruel blow anytime of year, but especially so in the run-up to Christmas.

“While flood waters have receded in Newcastle and the clean up has begun, Downpatrick town centre remains underwater.

“The clean-up has yet to commence. We are waiting overnight for waters to subside before DFI Rivers can start pumping the water back out of a temporary sand bag barrier.

“It is clear that a significant and easily accessible recovery scheme will be required to help get Downpatrick and the other areas of South Down affected this week back on their feet.”
